International Travel Requirements
International travel is defined as travel to, between, or within countries outside the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and its territories and possessions. University of Illinois System international business travel must be authorized by the department head or authorized delegate. It is the employee's responsibility to ensure their travel arrangements comply with University of Illinois policies and procedures and that their claims for reimbursement are accurate.
International Travel Insurance Requirements
All University of Illinois System employees traveling internationally for university business are required to enroll in travel insurance before their trip. This policy has been in effect since 2024 under System Policy 15.1.5 International Travel Insurance.
Effective July 1, 2026, compliance is strictly enforced: if travel insurance was not obtained prior to the trip, reimbursement requests will not be approved, and no exceptions will be granted. If university travel was purchased using a TCard without prior insurance enrollment, a noncompliance will be issued to the cardholder.
Before booking any international travel, please review the University of Illinois System International Travel Safety Policy and the Business & Finance International Travel Insurance web page for university-specific information and enrollment instructions.
